Councils demand payment

lighting

The councils of Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona and Manilva are asking the central government to take charge of the cost of lighting the A-7 motorway (the main coastal road).

Although the Spanish government is responsible for the general maintenance for the A-7, the local councils for the areas bypassed by the motorway have been paying the for the lighting for the last 15 years. Esperanza Oña (Fuengirola Mayoress), along with the mayors of the other municipalities are together demanding that the government reimburse the amount paid out.
20 years ago the town hall took responsibility, on a temporary basis, for the lighting the motorway when the Ministry of development refused to do it. Now in the current economic downturn it is for the Government to step up and pay for what it should have been paying for all this time.
